If anyone is interested, as early as 2008 we were already talking about a 
replacement for that API:

The original ItemViews-NG became Widgets-NG when we realised that the QWidget 
widgets wouldn't cut it for mobile devices. That in turn became the "Kinetic" 
project, which gave us QML. A second attempt was started, but the project was 
hijacked by Nokia management and derailed. A third attempt lost its virtue and 
produced QML components for Harmattan and Symbian only, without solving the 
original problem...

The source code is still available:

but the last commit was 3 years ago.
