Hi William:

I am using the Uwatec IR adapter which also uses the same chip and 
kernel driver (mcs7780) and I have no problems using it to download the 
dives from my Tec 2G to Subsurface.
I made no modifications to /etc/default/irda-utils and I don't run 
irattach. I might have to change the permissions of /dev/ttyUSBX, but 
other than that, Subsurface just donwloads the dives.

I know it's not much help, but ...
