Error on make

I was doing some work on the environment for the latest version (not 3.1.1)
when this happened.  I had changed "prefix" in the Makefile to $(HOME).  I
meant to do a "make distclean" but out of habit I typed "make clean".  The
result was clearly different so I then did a "make distclean" followed by a
simple make which ended with:

    CC linux.c
    MOC qt-gui.cpp
/bin/sh: 1: Syntax error: Unterminated quoted string
make: *** [qt-gui.moc] Error 2

I am guessing it was my "make clean" that caused the problem, but does
anyone have an idea what happened and/or how to fix it?

Please protect my address like I protect yours. When sending messages to
multiple recipients, use the BCC: (Blind carbon copy). Remove addresses
from a forwarded message body before clicking Send.
