Ubuntu can be configured to use the classic windowing. I do not mind
wasting a bit of screen estate when my working is much faster. I did hate
the Mac style menus back in nineties and Ubuntu adopting it didn't make it
any more appealing. So first thing I do on my Ubuntu boxes is (IIRC):

$ sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
- logout
- on login screen select a gnome-classic for windowing
- login

(Unless I install XFCE based Ubuntu in the first place.)
