As I said in my original email... this is something I want us to get
right and get well tested. We'll work on it right after the 3.0 release.

I don't intend for 3.1 to be more than a couple of months after 3.0, so
this isn't a major setback. So let's get this right, with sane
configuration, carefully tested fallbacks, etc.
