I completely agree.

Philip has indicated an interest in converting our current Makefile to
use autotools instead. Assuming that is still the case, I'd rely on that
to deal with the conditional compiling you are suggesting (otherwise I'd
need to do some more Makefile hacking - not something I'm looking
forward to).

Philip, are you still working on that? Any ETA of patches?
