these patches are definitely an improvement.
but unless the widget allows popups or some sort of text drawing, it's
still not clear how identification of multiple dives is possible on
the same map.
a pixel font is an option, i guess...where the flag + some dive info
are part of the same pixel buffer when
osm_gps_map_image_add_with_alignment() is called.
that may be "a bit too much" though, and also i have no idea how it would look.

the flag doesn't seem to show over here:
(subsurface.exe:5508): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_drawable_real_draw_pixbuf: assertion
 `src_y >= 0 && src_y + height <= gdk_pixbuf_get_height (pixbuf)' failed

also there is some whitespace near:
"   and OSM_GPS_MAP_SOURCE_VIRTUAL_EARTH_SATELLITE. We should make more of"
