Works for me on Gentoo box
Portage 2.1.11.52 (default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop, gcc-4.6.3, glibc-2.15-r3, 3.6.11-gentoo x86_64)
There're several errors on the console:
star at narwhal subsurface $ ../subsurface/start_scripts/subsurface
(process:23902): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (1000)
(process:23902): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
Using the fallback 'C' locale.
Seems no translations included (warning comes both for en_US.UTF-8 and ru_RU.UTF-8)
