feature request: multi-valued buddies list

Just to clarify: you actually create a pseudo-buddy foreach possible 
combination, just to keep current UI simple ?

My scuba diving association has 120 members, and as an instructor, I 
frequently have from one to three other people diving with me. 
Registering all possible combinations would need something like 
120*119*118 'buddies' :)

You can already have more than one tank associated with each dive, and 
that doesn't too be too much confusing for end users, despite this 
practice being quite specific to tek divers. So why would it be 
confusing to be able associate more than one buddy ?
