How about using the raw data from the dive computer as the internal data format? 
 From what I understood from the past discussion, it's mainly the sample data 
that takes (too) much space in xml representation. The raw data is usually very 
compact (at most a few kilobytes per dive). Even if it would have to be base64 
or hex encoded to store it into the xml file, it would be only a fraction of its 
xml representation. The main disadvantage is of course that you loose the human 
readability. But do people really hand edit the sample data in the xml? Note, 
that I'm only talking about the sample data, everything else would be kept as-is 
in the xml!

Just an idea of course.
