ok, it seems that the cause was that the patch file was with DOS/CRLF
line-break-delimiters. if i change it to UNIX/LF it applies for me.

the modification improves the divelist browsing quite a lot. though,
it still takes 1 second of a delay when switching between say, dives
#17 and #20 under this VM. perhaps the calculation could be improved
further or be made optional and disabled by default.
