By private email, Tomaz asked about how to recognize the WM/DE-session.

For MATE you could look for the mate-session process, or check whether one
of the following exists (well, perhaps not the last one):

$ export | grep -i mate
declare -x DESKTOP_SESSION="mate"
declare -x GDMSESSION="mate"
declare -x MATE_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID="this-is-deprecated"

Not sure if other distributions are set up to declare these variables
though :-/
