I completed my first pass through this. I squashed two commits together,
bringing it down to only 29 :-). I reworded many of the commit messages.
The code seems fine and doesn't seem to break anything. But of course
you left me many gifts of creative indentation and whitespace abuse. So
I'll need to clean that up and ask you to switch to what I push into
master in a little while to base future work on - otherwise patches
won't apply.

Yeah, right now it's EXTREMELY basic. But hey, it's a start and I'm
excited to see the work on an improved code base come together. This is
the merge window, so stuff like this is welcome.
