GSOC Proposal and Subsurface Questionnaire

Hello guys

I am Venkatesh Shukla, an undergraduate from IIT BHU, Varanasi. I am
applying to Google Summer of Code 2014 and would like to work with
Subsurface.

*Subsurface Questions*

*When did you first hear about Subsurface?*
I came upon subsurface while going through the list of participating
organisations of GSOC '14 - 24 Feb 2014

*Do you have any diving experience? (this is not essential, we have devs
that are not divers)*
No, I have had no diving experience.

*What attracted you to Subsurface?*
First, android projects present in Subsurface. Second, the big open source
names associated with Subsurface.

*What other open-source tools do you use?*
Firefox, Ubuntu Linux, Git, xchat, android, wikipedia, vim, vlc, etc

*Describe any participation by you in the Subsurface community (e.g.
created tutorials, submitted bug reports, asked or answered questions on
mailing lists or IRC).*
I have been in touch with Subsurface community both IRC channel (as
coderbrahmin) and the mailing list. I have both asked as well as answered
questions. I have submitted an issue regarding build failure of
subsurface-android on github.com (
https://github.com/glance-/subsurface-android/issues/1).

*Describe any contributions you have made to Subsurface development (e.g.
bug fixes, translations, packaging, testing).*
I have submitted the two prerequisite patches for Subsurface-companion
application as well as further patches for the same application.
The patches were related to
Ticket #423 - addition of a GPX parser to subsurface-companion application
Ticket #138 - addition of map picker to subsurface-companion application

*In exactly two sentences, why should we pick YOU?*
I have knowledge and experience of android application development, as well
as a bit of C, which matches the requirement of the project. I am
enthusiastic about open-source and learning from the subsurface community
and would like to contribute as much as possible.

No special plans. I'll be staying home and will be devoting all my time to
GSoC.

I have worked in a two projects -
1. Development of an android application with google app engine backend -

2. Analysis of event anaphora for Hindi Language -

*What are your favorite programming tools (editor, etc.)?*
Eclipse and Android Studio for android application development
Vim for C
Ubuntu for using above mentioned stuff.

*Describe any work on other open-source projects.*
I have not yet been a part of any open-source project.

I may also apply to wikimedia for development of news viewer application
for Wikinews.org
