we should avoid omitting the middle operand. it's non-standard C.

but see my recent patch:
[PATCH 4/4] Profile: fix a couple of warnings

"seconds" really should be "unsigned int". the patch addresses this
the correct way in the expense of additional FLOP.
alternatives are welcome as long as they solve both warnings, i would say.
