I am a physicist by day and before subsurface adopted Qt the only thing I knew about C++ was that it existed. At the time, I was really worried about that decision because I was afraid I could no longer contribute. The opposite turned out to be true: When you can build on what’s already there, the difference between C and C++ is infinitesimal (Linus lives on other levels of software engineering than me so this might be different for him). And I got along with Qt so much better than with GTK (to a large part because there is good documentation whereas it was in infinite trail an error for GTK for me) that I am now happy working on UI elements myself (at least up to mild complexity).

Just my $.02.
