some patches regarding the preferences mess

This is by no means complete, just a "I'm actually working"
this should improve a few things and break others, so don't merge this yet,
it's mostly a WIP.

It's ~mainly~ finished, I just need to finish *testing* and fixing a couple
of occasional bugs.
