The only way that can work is if they have written a userspace driver for the 
IrDA USB dongle. If you look at the faq ("My dive computer has an infrared 
interface. Can I read it out with Divemate?"), they have a list of a few 
specific adapters that works. These adapters are probably all using the same 
IrDA USB chipset.
