you do recall correctly. This was done by Rick (at least not by me). But I had done a quick search through the git commit messages for Rick’s name and this patch was the last one for  VPM-B, he later only did mobile stuff. But if I understand the tags correctly, all the his patches before are already in 4.52. I would rate this enough evidence that this patch sums up the discussion at the time (but I would reconsider if it does not properly apply to the 4.5 branch).
