renaming the default branch to 'main'

I don't see dive leader as reminiscent of nazi titles. And typically I'm fairly
sensitive to these things. Yeah, let's not call it "dear leader" :-)

A number of people have pointed out that this is likely more important
than the branch name, and I think I agree.
