Unfortunately I had forgotten to configure the device itself:

I had to edit `/etc/modprobe.d/irda-utils.conf' and add `mcs7780' to the
end of the file and change the following options in
`/etc/default/irda-utils':

ENABLE="true"
DEVICE="irda0"
MAX_BAUD_RATE="9600"

After plugging the dongle in I also need:

$ sudo irattach irda0 -s

Now everything runs smoothly.  The only thing I don't understand is the
last line, because I set `DISCOVERY="true"' and `AUTOMATIC="true"'.  Has
there anything else to be set?
